The Cheverus Stags beat the Oxford Hills Vikings 76-47 on Friday evening.
So far, the Stags played their first game of the season against the South Portland Red Riots, winning 48-28. Senior guard Maddie Fitzpatrick was the high scorer, holding over half of the team's points.
The Vikings battled the Edward Little Red Eddies for their opening game, winning 59-44. Junior forward Ella Pelletier scored over half their points as well.
The Stags came out with quite an urgency to put the Vikings in the ground. Twenty seconds in, Senior guard Ruth Boles dumped the ball to teammate Rachel Feeley, a Junior guard, for a quick layup. Cheverus kept Oxford Hills scoreless due to their aggressive trapping-defense until two minutes left when Pelletier converted an and-one to put her team on the board. The Stags remained ahead 22-6.
Fitzpatrick hit a three thirty seconds into the second quarter, reminding the Vikings of their deficit. However, just a minute after, Senior guard Milo Seams hit a three in response making the score 25-9. Cheverus continued to make their run while Oxford Hills barely made it over the double-digit threshold. The Stags lead 44-13 going into the second half
The Vikings came out on fire. Presumably, from a great half time pep talk from the coach. Thirty seconds in, Junior guard Gabbie Tibbetts banked a shot from the three point line. And just like that Oxford Hills began to take over. Pelletier swished many of her shots and penetrated Cheverus’ sturdy defense to draw fouls in the paint. The Vikings definitely upped their offense, but were still down 56-33 going into the last quarter.
Pelletier continued to score every opportunity she had to get her team back in the game, but the Stags did not ease up. With six minutes left in the game, Senior guard Megan Dearborn secured the offensive rebound, kicking it out to Fitzpatrick for a timely three pointer, making the score 59-38. Then, Cheverus Freshman guard, Emilie Umland, hit two threes in a row, making the final score 76-47.
The Cheverus Stags take on the Thornton Academy Trojans, Tuesday December 19th, at home. While the Oxford Hills Vikings play the Mt. Blue Cougars away on Tuesday December 19th.
