The Oceanside Mariners won against the Yarmouth Clippers 55-34 last night.
Yarmouth has a current record of 2-1, losing to the York Wildcats by just eight points. The other two wins were blowouts on the Clippers end. They managed to hold both teams in the twenties on the scoreboard. Yarmouth’s fast defense causes a lot of turnovers for their opponents granting them many fast break points.
Oceanside, with a record of 4-0, hasn’t seen much competition in their schedule yet. The Mariner’s are home to multiple-offer Junior forward Bailey Breen. She’s been averaging 21 points per game and racking up rebounds in the double digits- will Yarmouth have an answer for her?
Starting off hot for Yarmouth, Senior guard Nenna Panozzo hit a three from the top of the arch thirty seconds in. But, just a few seconds later Aubrianna Hoose, a Junior guard, was fouled on a layup and made the bonus to tie the game 3-3. Oceanside used several set plays for Breen allowing her to convert ten points in the first quarter. The Mariners led 18-8 heading into the second quarter.
Oceanside continued to feed the ball to Breen, she scored another ten points in this quarter. Sophomore guard, Renee Ripley, passed to Breen from the baseline for a deuce, making the score 20-8 Oceanside. With two minutes left in the half, Senior forward Lauren Keaney fed the ball to teammate Cate King, a Senior forward, in the paint for a bank-shot, cutting the Mariners lead to ten. With a couple minutes left in the game the Clippers put on a full-court press causing many turnovers for Oceanside. However, the Mariners were still ahead 28-16.
Breen opened the half hitting two consecutive threes from the corner advancing Oceanside’s lead 36-19. Clipper senior guard Regan Sullivan hit a floater in the key over four defenseman at the three minute mark. Oceanside won this quarter scoring 13 points, and led 41-25 heading into the last quarter.
The Mariners got five offensive rebounds in the first minute of the final quarter and held the ball offensively for most of it, forcing the Clippers to commit fouls for the ball. Breen continued to make post moves and further the score for their win. Oceanside took the win 55-34.
Both teams play again this weekend on Saturday, December 23rd. Yarmouth will battle Spruce Mountain at home while Yarmouth plays away at Freeport.
